In a matchup of two of the top teams in the 4th Region between the Franklin-Simpson Lady Cats and the Barren County Trojanettes on Tuesday night at Barren County High School, the Lady Cats played their worst game of the season as they were defeated by the Trojanettes 64-23.
Lady Cats’ head coach Ashley Taylor called this game embarrassing while Trojanettes’ head coach Piper Lindsay called this a “statement game”.
Franklin-Simpson scored only one field goal in the 1st Quarter as Kloie Smit’ basket had them trailing 4-2 and from that point, Barren County’s Abby Varney took over. She made three 3-pointers in the 1st Quarter to score 13 points in the period to lead 21-2 in the quarter. Smith;s two free throws early in the 2nd Quarter ended the Trojanettes’ 17-0 run and Malyea Partinger made all four field goals to score eight points for the Lady Cats. But Varney dropped two more 3-pointers to score 10 points with Kaitlyn Elmore adding six points as Franklin-Simpson trailed 37-12 at halftime.
The Lady Cats were once again held to one field goal in a period as Lyniah Brown scored early in the 3rd Quarter. Smith added a pair of free throws. Varney attacked the basket to score 10 more points as she left the game scoring a career high of 33 points. Brown scored four points in the 4th Quarter with Sa’Nya Downey coming off the bench to add three as Franklin-Simpson lost, as Taylor said embarrassingly, 64-23 to Barren County.
Malyea Partinger led the Lady Cats in scoring with eight points as no player scored in double figures. Along with Varney’s 33 points for the Trojanettes, Kaitlyn Elmore added 11 points.
The Lady Cats will have a chance to finish 13th District play i\undefeated when they host the Logan County Lady Cougars for Homecoming pon Friday night. Tip-off time is scheduled to immediately follow the 2023 Homecoming King and Queen ceremony of the boys/girls’ varsity doubleheader that has the boys’ game starting at 6:00 p.m.
